It debuted in 1989 but the family originally appeared in shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show two years prior. The concept was generic for TV: a family sitcom. But Matt Groening subverted expectations by making the family dysfunctional and sometimes dumb but still full of heart. There was Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, and Maggie, as well as an entire town of people filled with characters. The Simpsons was also home
